William was the eleventh of thirteen children born to Hugh Botkin and Rachel Keener.
William married Martha Ann Hiatt on 20 Dec 1849 in Randolph county Indiana. Martha was the daughter of Lewis Hiatt and Charity Kimbrough.
William and Martha had seven children: Emma Cordelia; Mary Viola; Lewis Alonzo; Hugh Orlando; Oliver Perry; Elmer Ellsworth and Ira Morton.
William married Docia Calloway Butler on 15 Oct 1868 in Randolph county Indiana. William and Docia had three children: Martha Ann "Mattie"; Thirza and John William.
"He has 300 acres of land, and has a fine brick residence, one of the best in the township. He is an enterpising, wide-awake, prosperous farmer and business man, and has been County Commissioner one term (three years). He is an active Methodist, a thorough Republican, and an earnest temperance man, and is altogether an honor to the community in which he dwells, having been a resident of the neighborhood during his whole life, fifty-nine years.
