KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY AS HOUSTON POLICE OFFICER


Officer James Charles Boswell, 29,was killed in the Line of Duty as a Houston Police Officer on Sunday, December 9, 1989. He was born on Thursday, November 29, 1960 in Meridian, Mississippi

He was a member of the Houston Police Patrolman's Union, Calvary Baptist Church, and National Athletic Trainers Association. He was a former Athletic Trainer at Liberty High School, Liberty, Texas. J.C. was a member of the 1982 graduating class of Lamar University.

Survivors include: Parents Cecil E. (Sonny) and Martha Boswell, Meridian, Mississippi; brothers Michael and wife Cindy Boswell, San Diego, California, Joey and wife Julie Boswell, Texas City, Texas and Kenneth Mark Boswell, Meridian, Mississippi; sister Cherie and husband David Lockhart, Meridian, Mississippi; grandmother Josephine Stampley Jackson; grandfather Leslie Stampley and great-grandmother Wilma H. Johnson all of Meridian, Mississippi, as well as two nieces; two nephews; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

A funeral service will be held in Houston at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 12, 1989 at the Second Baptist Church, 6400 Woodway with Rev. David Dickson officiating.

Further services will be conducted under the direction of James Webb Funeral Home, 2514 7th Street, Meridian, Mississippi at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 14, 1989 with Rev. Jim Brannon of Highland Baptist Church officiating.

Interment will take place at Meridian Memorial Park, Meridian, Mississippi.

"Officer James Boswell was shot and killed by a man who claimed to be a DEA informer. Officer Boswell and his partner were on a traffic stop when the man, unrelated to the traffic stop, came up and began to knock on the officer's window. Officer Boswell rolled down the window and told the man to wait on the sidewalk. The man then began knocking on the window again and was again told to wait. The man then began banging on the roof and window a third time.

Fearing the man would break the glass Officer Boswell exited the cruiser and told the man to wait down the street or he would be put in the cruiser. As he looked away to unlock the cruiser the man pulled out a .38 caliber handgun and shot him in the head. The suspect began to run but was shot in the side by Officer Boswell's partner. The suspect was convicted of murder and sentenced to death. The man was executed on November 19, 2002.
