Alvin "Denzel" Boso, 78, of Lubeck, peacefully went to be with the Lord and loved ones who preceded him, on Sept. 2, 2009, at his home surrounded by his loving wife and daughters, after a seven month battle with Leukemia. Denzel, the patriarch of a very tight-knit family, was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was born June 3, 1931 in Parkersburg, the oldest son of Melvin & Maggie Holliday Boso. After losing his father when he was 16 to a heart attack, Denzel became the caretaker of his family, which included his mother, three younger brothers, and a younger sister. After graduating from Parkersburg High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy (1950-1954) in order to support his family. During his tour of duty in the Navy, Denzel sailed around the world on the USS Waller and served in the Korean War Conflict. Shortly after returning from the Navy, Denzel met the love of his life, Shirley Ann Grimm. The two would have been married 55 years, next month. After their marriage, he started his career at DuPont Washington Works, from which he retired after 35 years. Denzel was an active member of his community. He served on the Board of Directors for the Lubeck Civic Center since 1971. He was a member of the Lubeck United Methodist Church. Denzel had many hobbies and excelled at them all. He was a member of the Stardusters Square-dance Club and was an avid runner, who participated in many races in Parkersburg, and has won many trophies. In addition he enjoyed bowling, pool, golf, fishing, and card games with friends and family. Denzel is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Ann Boso; daughter, Sharon Boso Martin; son-in-law, Tom Martin; grandson, Doug Martin of Greensboro, NC; granddaughter, Keri Martin of Lexington, KY; daughter, Brenda Boso Hannigan; son-in-law, Tom Hannigan; grandsons, Nathan and Tanner Hannigan of Charleston; granddaughter, Jaime Hjort; grandson-in-law, Timothy Hjort; great-grandson, Finley Hjort; and great-granddaughter, Hjort whose birth is imminent of Ashburn, Va. He is also survived by his brother, Edwin C. Boso of Washington, WV. Denzel was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Melvin Harold Boso and Charles Clyde Boso; sister, Melvina Hickman; as well as granddaughters, Angela Dawn Anderson and Kaitlyn Marie Hannigan. A celebration of Denzel's life will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Mark Parsons officiating. Entombment will be in Sunset Memory Gardens with military rites provided by the American Legion Post 15. Visitation will be Saturday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lubeck United Methodist Church, 1771 Harris Highway, Washington, WV 26181 or to the American Cancer Society, 3901 Briscoe Road, Parkersburg, WV 26101.
