Jenny (Jill) Bode
Jill Bode, born on October 17, 1920, died peacefully in the early morning of June 29, at the age of 89. For most of her life, Jill was a resident of Lynden, Washington, but her death took place at the Loving Heart Adult Family Home in Bellingham (near her daughter Barbara Bode Mattson), where, in failing health, she was tenderly cared for these past two years.
Jill was the tenth of 14 children of John and Alice (Hendricks) Bosman. She graduated from Lynden Christian Grade School, also attending Lynden Public High School for two years before responsibilities of helping out with a large family ended her formal education. In 1943 in San Francisco, following a two-year engagement, Jill married Bernard (Bud) Bode, then serving in the Navy in World War II. Their marriage of 63 years ended with Bud's death in February, 2007.
After her three children were in school, Jill worked as a sales clerk in the Lynden Department Store, and later at Hilton's in Bellingham. In retirement, she took a great interest in photography and flower gardening, and was a frequent exhibitor at the Northwest Washington County Fair. She had an interest in genealogy and wrote a history of the Bosman family. She also enjoyed knitting afghans for family and friends.
Throughout her adult life she was a member of the Third Christian Reformed Church of Lynden. She was devoted to her family and will be missed by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Surviving are her children, Bruce (Flossie) Bode, of Port Townsend, Washington, Robert (Beth) Bode, of Rensselaer, New York, and Barbara (Carl) Mattson, of Bellingham; grandchildren, Jonathan (Amy) Bode, Sarah (Sean) Kullman, Katie (Andrew) Bode-Lang and Libby Bode; great-grandchildren, Joshua, Caleb, and Evangeline Bode and Grace and Lila Kullman; her brothers, James, Albert and Pete Bosman; sister, Esther Rupke; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bud; brothers, William, Herman, Henry, John and Ben; and sisters, Nellie Terpstra, Betty Triplett, Etta Bode and Alice Spoelstra.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 2, at 2 p.m. at the Third Christian Reformed Church of Lynden located at 514 Liberty Street. For those unable to attend the memorial service, a visitation will take place on Thursday evening, July 1, at the Gillies Funeral Home between 5:00 and 6:30 p.m. A private burial service will take place prior to the service.
Those who wish, may make memorial contributions in Jill's name to: Third CRC Endowment Fund, 514 Liberty St., or Lynden Christian School Endowment Fund, 417 Lyncs Dr., both of Lynden, WA 98264 or Whatcom Hospice, 800 E. Chestnut St., Bellingham, WA 98226.
