Algernon Borthwick, 1st Baron Glenesk, took over as editor of the Morning Post when his father Peter died in 1852. In 1876, with the help of Andrew Montagu, he became owner of the Post.

He was knighted in 1880 and was an ally of Lord Randolph Churchill. In 1885 he was elected as a Member of Parliment for South Kensington.

He married Alice Beatrice Lister April 5, 1870. They had two children, Lilias Margaret Frances Borthwick, wife of Seymour Henry (1871-1965) and Oliver Borthwick (1873-1905).
