The son of John & Maria Magdalena Hoeneisen Buss [sic] and the husband of Susanna Stouch Boose, whom he married November 12, 1865, in York. In 1860, he was a laborer living in Dover Township, York County. He stood 5' 11" tall and had brown hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in York November 8, 1862, and assigned to Co. G, 166th Pa Inf, serving at the rank of private until honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863. he then volunteered in Manchester Township August 23, 1864, with Co. D, 200th Pa Inf, serving at the rank of private until honorably discharged with his company on May 30, 1865.
