The Rev. Vernon M. Bonniwell born in Hacks Neck, Virginia on June 5, 1929 was deceased on September 27, 2006 at 11:40 p.m. Surviving are his wife, Ann Ulmer Bonniwell, four children: David M. Bonniwell of Columbus, Ohio; Susan E. Van Ness of Hopewell, Virginia; Nancy L. Schmidt of Vinton, Virginia; and Robert C. Bonniwell of Alton, IL; eleven grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, June Charnock of Melfa, Va and Ann Eagle of Littleton, NC. After graduation from Hampton High School in 1947, Vernon entered the USAF, remaining for 29 years. He served as a Church Business Administrator for Chapels in the US, Korea, Japan, Hawaii and Germany. Awards presented to him include Meritorious Service Medal, Commendation Ribbon, Air Force Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korea Service Medal with two Battle Stars, Small Arms Marksmanship Ribbon, Longevity Medal, NCO Academy Graduate Medal, Republic of Korea Unit Presidential Citation, and United Nations Service Medal. After retirement from military service he attended St. Louis Christian College and was graduated June 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts Ministry degree. He pastored two churches in Illinois before returning to the Eastern Shore. He was pastor of Mears Memorial UMC, Keller for 6 and l/2 months in 1988 when his doctor advised retirement from full time ministry. He and his wife then moved to Florida to live with their daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Joe Schmidt and finally all moved to Vinton, Virginia. He was active in a support role, preaching in various churches, teaching classes and conducting weddings and funerals. His most cherished ministry was to senior citizens in Nursing homes. There will be a visitation at the Williams-Onancock Funeral Home on Monday, October 2, 2006, between 12:00-1:00. A graveside service with military honors will be at the St. George Cemetery, Pungoteague at 2:00 p.m. where five generations of Bonniwells before Vernon have been laid to rest to await the General Resurrection.
