Betty Jean Holden Bonnett passed away peacefully Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, following living with hydrocephalus for more than 10 years.
Betty was born in Greeley, Colo., on Dec. 16, 1927, the younger of two daughters of Edwin and Gladys Holden. The family moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho, in 1940, where Betty attended school and graduated from Idaho Falls High School. She then attended the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho, studying foreign relations and Spanish. It was at the U of I that Betty met John R. Bonnett. They were married in June of 1948 and, after a brief time in Moscow, moved to Idaho Falls.
In addition to raising a family, Betty was active in church work, teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir, ringing hand bells and being an ordained deacon in the First Presbyterian Church of Twin Falls. She was active in Girl Scouting and Jobs Daughters, both as a youth and an adult. Betty was very involved in the PEO Sisterhood, serving as president in three local chapters (AA, Idaho Falls; B, Blackfoot; and AI, Twin Falls), and she was a past president of the Idaho State Chapter of PEO, having served on the state's executive board for seven years.
Always active, Betty filled her spare time with reading, knitting, needlepoint, playing bridge and entertaining friends. Summers were spent with children and grandchildren at the family cabin near West Yellowstone, Mont. This was a great place to watch children learn to swim, water ski and build projects while she relaxed in her lounge chair by the side of the lake.
Betty is survived by her husband, John; and three of their four children, John H. and Tina of Twin Falls, Robert K. III and Jann of Shelton, Wash., and Brenda J. and Jim Atchison of Pittsburg, Calif. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, John T., Shanna, Robert K. IV, Michael, Sarah, Katy, Annie and Jennifer; and numerous great-grandchildren. Betty was preceded in passing by their daughter, Nancy Lynn Bonnett.
A celebration of life conducted by the Rev. Phil Price will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, at the First Presbyterian Church of Twin Falls, 209 Fifth Ave. N. Services are under the direction of Serenity Funeral Chapel in Twin Falls.
