Gladys Almendinger, 87, of Warren/Monroe passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2013.

Born November 28, 1925, in rural Apple River, Illinois, she was the daughter of Frank and Hazel (Sherard) Bonjour.

Gladys attended Broadway Grade School, completed three years at Apple River High School and her final year at Warren High School, graduating in 1943.

On September 10, 1949, Gladys married John Merton Almendinger at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Warren. He preceded her in death in 1988.

She was also preceded in death by son John (2005), daughter, Roxanne (2010) and John's wife, Kim (2010).

Surviving Gladys are son, Scott (Stacey) and their daughter, Katy of Downers Grove, IL, son, Matt of Stewartville, MN, daughter, Lisa of Monroe, WI; John and Kim's children, Aimee (Christopher) Frazier, Roxanne, Erin and Jack Almendinger, all of Ft Worth/Southlake, TX, as well as three great- grandchildren, Madisyn, Cleary and Ruby.

Following graduation, Gladys accepted the position of Cashier/Bookkeeper for Illinois Northern Utility Company in Warren. Subsequently she was the Secretary for the Warren School system, the Assessor for Warren Township, Cashier at Hartzell's Family Foods, Typist for The Sentinel Leader and The Flash publications as well as Black Dot Publishing. Gladys also helped Mert operate his business, The Warren Dry Cleaners, until it was sold in the early 70's.

Gladys was an avid reader, always enjoying a good mystery as well as solving crossword puzzles and cryptoquips, but her favorite past times were going bowling with the girls, dancing with Mert on Saturday nights and taking scenic car rides on Sundays with her family.

Over the years, she belonged to the Warren Woman's Club, the Warren Historical Society, Warren Birthday Club and several card clubs.

Family and friends are invited to join Gladys's children and grandchildren at a graveside service to be held at St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery in Warren at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2013. The service will be officiated by Father Max Streidl. A luncheon will follow at St. Ann's Catholic Church after the graveside services. A memorial has been established in her name.

Gladys's family sincerely thanks Dr. Cleary and staff in Warren for their many years of care and the staff at Liberty Dialysis of Monroe for improving the quality of her final years. Leamon's Funeral Home is assisting the family.
