Mary B. Smith passed away peacefully on Monday morning, the 31st of October 2011.
Mary Alice Bone was born on the 9th of March 1923 in Commerce, Georgia. Her parents were William Grady Bone and Agnes Higgenbotham Bone. She graduated valedictorian from Commerce High School in 1940 and attended the University of Georgia.
On the 20th of December 1947, she married Charles Binford Moore, of Amory, Mississippi, and the couple soon moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where Charles was employed by the Esso Oil Company. In 1960, with Charles' transfer, they moved to Houston. They were happily married for thirty years and had four children: Patsy, Anne, Charles, Jr., and Catherine. Charles passed away in 1976.
Mary married Weldon Homer Smith in 1978, and they enjoyed twenty-five years together. In the winter of 2004, Weldon passed away.
During her lifetime, Mary very much enjoyed her civic activities, bridge clubs, book clubs, and dance clubs. She was a gracious southern lady whose energy was boundless. Mary was an avid flower arranger and an active member of the River Oaks Garden Club, as well as Judge Emeritus of The Garden Club of America. Mary was a member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church, the Houston Country Club, and the Junior League of Houston.
She is survived by her four children: Mary Patricia Moore of Houston, Anne Eppright, and husband Richard, of Fredricksburg, Catherine Wenske, and husband Dennet, of Austin, and Charles B. "Chip" Moore, Jr., of Berkeley, California; and by her four grandchildren: Emily Collier Eppright, Richard Thomas "Trey" Eppright, Jr., Morgan Elizabeth Wenske and Dennet Ray "Drew" Wenske, Jr. Her one brother, Aubrey Bone, five nieces, and two nephews, also survive her.
The family desires to acknowledge and express their heartfelt gratitude to Drs. James Willerson and Amany Ahmed; as well as their deep appreciation to Mary's dedicated care-providers: Maria Galvan, Birza Valero, Edith Elias, and Shery Poz.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o'clock this afternoon until eight o'clock this evening, Wednesday, the 2nd of November, in the Library and Grand Foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
The Memorial Service is to be conducted at two o'clock in the afternoon on Thursday, the 3rd of November, at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road in Houston, where the Rev. Martin J. Bastian, Senior Associate Rector for Pastoral Care, is to officiate. Immediately following, the family will greet friends in the adjacent Bagby Parish Hall.
Prior to the service, the family will have gathered for a private interment at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial gifts, with the family's gratitude, may be directed to the River Oaks Garden Club, 2503 Westheimer Rd., Houston, TX, 77098; St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Rd., Houston, TX, 77056; the Houston Center for Speech and Hearing, 3636 W.
