Mary Carolyn Bonds, more appropriately and affectionately known as Grandmary, was born on December 2, 1944, in Muskogee, Oklahoma. From that day forward, she blessed those that knew her on this earth until her death took her from us on May 3, 2011. Having the title of Grandmary one would naturally expect her life to have been filled with numerous academic and civic achievements and she did not disappoint. Some of her proudest accomplishments included graduating from Muskogee Central High School in 1962, Graduating from the University of Oklahoma in 1966 as a devoted Gamma Phi Beta sister with a Bachelor's Degree in Education, obtaining a Master's Degree in Education from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, teaching English and encouraging countless students at Hilldale High School in Muskogee, Oklahoma where she was voted by the students to be Teacher of the Year for the 1996-1997 school year, becoming an accomplished rider of horses including hunter/jumpers, at one time sponsoring a trophy at the Tulsa Charity Horse Show, becoming a docent at the Tulsa Zoo and licensed by the Oklahoma Wildlife Department to rehabilitate birds of prey allowing her to educate thousands about the wonders of God's creations, being appointed by Governor George Nigh to the Oklahoma Library Board, being a member of P.E.O., Chapter B, being co-owner and operator of New York Design Company, and tutor with the Muskogee Literary Council. It would be easy to believe the title of Grandmary was given to this intelligent and elegant woman because of her voluminous and impressive academic and civic achievements alone. However, the grandeur for which the title of Grandmary was bestowed and for which she will forever be remembered is the grandeur of her love for her family and friends. This love was expressed in endless ways including driving to and cheering at countless sporting events for her children and grandchildren, attending innumerable innertube floats and costumed gatherings with her Sequoyah Club family, spending an incalculable number of hours listening to and helping friends and family in need, spending countless hours with the horses she loved either riding, chasing or occasionally being dragged by them, caring for and nursing back to health a myriad of critters as the Matriarch of "The Wilderness Family," spreading her contagious laughter to untold numbers, and filling us all with immeasurable joy. Those immediate family that knew this grand love and went on before her and who are now reunited with her again are her parents Raymond and Carrye Holcomb and her sister Judy Holcomb. Those who survive her and whose lives have been forever blessed by her grand love were her husband, A. Camp Bonds, Jr., her sister Dr. Linda "Nan" Glenn, her son Jeff Bonds and his wife Callie, her son David Bonds and his wife Melissa, her grandchildren, Sarah Katherine, Nolen Thomas, Mary Carolyn III and Jeffrey Camp, and countless other family members and friends. Grandmary was indeed grand and she will be greatly missed. Well done My good and faithful servant. Visitation will be available at Bradley Funeral Home on Friday, May 6, 2011. A Memorial Service honoring Grandmary will be held at St. Paul's United Methodist Church at 2130 West Okmulgee, Muskogee, Oklahoma, at 2:00p.m., Saturday, May 7, 2011. The family has entrusted Bradley Family Funeral Service of Muskogee with the arrangements.
