CONCORD - Mr. Lawson Cauble Bonds, 88, of Hyde Park Dr., passed away at his home Monday morning. A Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Forest Hill United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. David Hockett and Rev. Merrill Perkins. The family will receive friends following the service in the Church Parlor.
Lawson was born March 1, 1922, on Pitts School Rd., one mile from Poplar Tent Presbyterian Church to the late H.E. and Nattie Cauble Bonds. He graduated from W.R. Odell High School and attended N.C. State College for two years. Lawson served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, being part of the original crew and a "plank owner" of the USS Yosemite, which was a supply and repair ship. He was a ship fitter 1st Class for all of his duty in the Pacific Theatre, including occupation duty in Sasabo, Japan. He received several service ribbons. Lawson returned to Concord working for Zack Roberts and later opening, Lawson Bonds Studio in the mid 1950s until retiring in 1988.
Lawson is survived by his wife of 53 years, Martha Maxine "Mac" Basinger Bonds; brother, Ralph C. Bonds of Concord; nieces, Catherine Moore and Elizabeth Saville; and nephews, Tony Bonds, Eddie Bonds, Bobby Bonds, Richard Bonds, Brown Gardner, Bud Gardner, Lee Basinger, Tony Basinger, and Sonny Holcomb.
Memorials may be made to their church, Forest Hill United Methodist Church, 265 Union St.N., Concord, NC 28025 or to Poplar Tent Presbyterian Church, 6841 Poplar Tent Rd., Concord, NC 28027.
