Essie Jane was born in Shirley Arkansas on a hot summer's day on July 31, 1919. She was the second of eight children and the first of two girls. Essie Jane was the second child born to Roey and Lena Bonds.

In the early 1930's the Bonds family drove to central California in a small tuck with one pot for cooking. Her brother Alvin is currently writing a memoir of their journey during the dust bowl titled: Run Dickie Run. Essie dropped out of school in sixth grade to help her mother with the raising of her younger siblings. Her brothers and sister looked up to her as their second mother.

In 1939 she met the love of her life, Charles Loren Geoble. They soon wed and in 1941 their first daughter, Bobbie, was born. Loren served in the Navy in the Pacific Theater and Essie became a war bride. After the war was over, in Oct. of 1946 their second daughter, Judi was born.

Essie and Loren were married for 25 years but due to health problems, this marriage came to an end. In 1969 she married Floyd Atkinson, who loved her and gave her great care until his death in 1977.

Essie was preceded in death by her parents Roey and Lena Bonds. Brothers; Ray, Anslie, her only sister Doris, and grandson Jeff Harris, who was born on her fiftieth birthday.

She leaves her brothers: Alvin, Herbert, Hugh, and Jerry Bonds. Daughters; Bobbie Bentley (Jerry) Visalia Ca., Judi Loren Grace (Peter) Chico Ca., Grandchildren: Tammy Taylor (Mike), David Webb and Roger Taylor, all of Exeter. Dana Adkisson Howes (Bill) of Chico, Spencer Adkisson (Cassie). Eleven great great grand children and one great- great granddaughter. She was affectingly known as "Nanny".

Essie Jane was in a care facility for more than 35 years due to ill health. Throughout the years all nurses fondly remember her as a joyous and gracious person, who never complained and who always responded with a "thank you". Essie loved children, she loved to sing and she loved a good laugh.

There will be a funeral service held on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 1:00 p.m., Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home. To view obituary and send condolences online, please go to NewtonBracewell.com.
