Herbert S. "Herb" Bonds, 73, of Citrus Springs, Florida, died Friday, June 6, 2014, at Diamond Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center, Lecanto, from injuries sustained in a fall at his home on May 13. He was born Feb. 9, 1941, in Detroit, Michigan. Upon his retirement as a machinist supervisor from Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington, he came to Citrus Springs in September 2000. He was an avid golfer until April 2011, when severe COPD due to emphysema forced him to stop playing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bruce H. Bonds and Emma L. Bonds; a brother, John Bonds; grandparents; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Jean Bonds of Citrus Springs; their children, Sarah (Rory) Alonzo, Port Orchard, Washington and Matthew (Mena) Bonds, Renton, Washington; daughters, Deborah Green, Roodhouse, Illinois, and Robin Simpson, Saratoga, California; 11 grandchildren; and their dog, Nutmeg; brother, Billie R. (Kim) Bonds, Aptos, California; sister, Linda C. (Ernie) Handy, Lake Mary; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Private cremation took place under the direction of the Neptune Society. There will be no funeral or memorial service. In remembrance of Herb, his family suggests donations be made to Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches Inc., for Caruth Camp in Inglis, or to the American Lung Association.
