C. Christine Bonds, 87, died in Austin, Wednesday, July 14, 2010. Graveside services will be be 2 p.m. Sunday, July 18, at Valley Mills Cemetery in Valley Mills, under the direction of Foss Funeral Home.
Charlotte Christine "Chris" was born in Valley Mills, Texas, to the late Laura Jeannette Burns Bonds and Keller Holmes Bonds. She grew up in Valley Mills with her siblings, the late Opal Bonds Simpson, Jake Bonds and the late Bill J. Bonds. After completing high school, Christine graduated from Providence School of Nursing in Waco in 1943. She continued her education by earning a BSNS degree from Louisiana State University in New Orleans. Also, she completed a MS degree in Nursing from Marquette University in Milwaukee. Christine's professional career was spent primarily in nursing education. She served as a faculty member and then Assistant Director at Providence Hospital School of Nursing in Waco for many years. This was followed by ten years as Associate Director at Hotel Dieu School of Nursing in El Paso. When the University of Texas acquired the School at Hotel Dieu, Christine was named Dean and Professor of the new School of Nursing at the University of Texas at El Paso. She completed her professional career at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, retiring in 1984.
During her working years, Christine was honored with many awards including El Paso Woman of the Year in 1971. She was also chosen as Texas District # 1 Nurse of the Year in 1968. Additionally, though not a Catholic, Christine was a proud Affiliate of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. She was nominated for this honor by her close friend of over 60 years, the late Sister Aloysius Williams, D. C. Additionally, many former students remember her fondly for her support, guidance, and kindness. Christine's long-term professional affiliations included active memberships in the American Nurses' Association, National League for Nursing, and Sigma Theta Tau, among other organizations. She also served as a Special Visitor for Accrediting Schools of Nursing and a member of the Accrediting Board of Review, both for the National League for Nursing.
Besides love and affection for her family and nursing, Christine enjoyed animals and sports of all kinds. She never failed to follow the Longhorns, Notre Dame, Marquette teams, the Dallas Cowboys and the San Antonio Spurs.
Christine was preceded in death by her sister, Opal and husband, J.R. Simpson, of Waco; a brother, Bill Bonds and wife, Mary, from Austin; a nephew, Gary Bonds; and a niece, Elaine Bonds, both of Waco.
Survivors include her brother, Jake Bonds and wife, Oleene, of Waco; nephew Johnny Simpson and wife, Frances, of Tyler; nieces, Barbara Bonds Thomas and husband, Dennis, of Austin; and Janet Bonds Somerville of Round Rock; great-nieces, Anne Simpson Evans of Houston, Laurie Simpson Turman and husband, John, of Tyler, Victoria Lauren Thomas of Austin, Melody Louise Somerville of Austin, Allison Bonds of Waco; five great-nephews, Kent Simpson and wife, Georgeanna, of Corinth, Shay Cullen Bryant and wife, Nikki, of Round Rock, Jeffrey Bruce Bryant and wife, Karen, of San Antonio, namesake, Blake Christopher Newman, of Austin, and Matthew Bonds, of Waco; three great-great nieces and five great-great-nephews, Kelli Ann Evans, of Houston, Taylor and Alicia Turman, of Tyler, Jake and Jed Simpson, of Corinth, Brianna Bryant, of Round Rock, and Walker and Weston Bryant, of San Antonio.
