Kentucky Post--April 17, 1997

Ferry pilot James A. Bond, of Ghent

James Andrew Bond wanted to go out in style.

So, at his request, eight women will serve as pallbearers for the retired Ghent ferry pilot.

''If he was going to go out, he was going to go out on the arms of eight pretty women,'' said his daughter, Barbara Taylor, of Louisville.

''It was his directive.''

Mr. Bond, 77, died Tuesday at King's Daughters Hospital in Madison, Ind.

He was the former owner of Bond's Marathon Station in Ghent.

Then he became the pilot of the Martha A. Graham-Ghent and Vevay Ferry, which operated on the Ohio River.

He retired from the job when a bridge was built across the Markland Dam in 1978, his daughter said. Mr. Bond became a custodian with Kentucky Utilities Ghent Generating Station.

He was an Army veteran of World War II.

''He was a colorful local guy,'' Mrs. Taylor said. ''He was a historian for Ghent, Ky., population 400. I believe he even was the mayor of Ghent for awhile.''

In his spare time, Mr. Bond enjoyed making wine. He had his own label, ''Ruptured Duck,'' and gave the bottles away to his friends, his daughter said.

Other survivors include a son, Robbie Bond of Bowling Green; and three grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John Church, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton.

Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton. Memorials are suggested to the church, 507 Fifth St., Carrollton, Ky., 41008.
