There is a significant discrepancy between the date of birth for John Bolton, as inscribed on the memorial, and the date of birth shown for him in the Sons of the American Revolution Patriot Research System. According to the SAR, this John Bolton (Patriot No. P-117310) was born in 1757 (not 1782), died in 1838, and was buried in Shelby, TN. The Patriot record that I am referring to states that John's second wife was named Mary Lancaster, which confirms that the record I am looking at is for the individual named on the memorial.

The sources cited by the SAR for the information provided in their records are:

1. Revolutionary War Graves Register. Clovis H. Brakebill, compiler. 672pp. SAR. 1993.

2. SAR Revolutionary War Graves Register CD. Progeny Publishing Co: Buffalo, NY. 1998.

According to Virginia Marriage Books, John and Christian were married on 10 Feb 1785 in Pittsylvania, VA. The Virginia Births and Christenings, 1584-1917, database at Family Search shows that John Bolton was born on 11 Jul 1757, in St. James Northam Parish, Goochland, VA, son of Charles and Elizabeth (Hickins) Bolton. The year of birth shown in this record matches with the year of birth shown in the SAR Patriot Research System.
