Esther Frances Mather Bogue, age 91, died Sunday, March 19, at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames. A memorial service in her honor will be at 3 p.m. Friday, March 24, at Calvary United Methodist Church in Ames with the Rev. Lynn Elrod officiating.
Esther, born to Ebb and Alta Mather on Oct. 13, 1914, in Tarkio, Mo., shared her early years with her parents, four sisters and one brother in the farming community. The family lived in Nebraska and Missouri.
She graduated from Westboro High School in Missouri in 1932. She moved to Iowa in the mid 1930s and married Detlef George Bogue Nov. 11, 1937. They lived in the Des Moines area until they moved to Ames in 1950. In the early 1960s, she started part-time work at the Ames High School cafeteria, continuing until she retired.
Her primary focus was her family, which she cared for and nurtured. As the family grew, this caring extended to all of her many grandchildren.
She was active in various activities throughout her life, including the Pythian Sisters, and was very active with the Circle through the church. She always was active with her close friends and enjoyed participating regularly in a bridge club.
The hobbies that gave her the most joy were her artistic projects. For many years, she enjoyed painting in all types of mediums. Her love of nature was reflected in almost every endeavour. She loved to be challenged by almost every type of art, including sewing, quilting and tatting, just to name a few. Her paintings and hand-made quilts will be treasured gifts for those she left behind.
She never was intimidated by change. She learned to use a computer at age 81 and enjoyed sending regular e-mail messages to friends and family. She incorporated her computer skills into her artistic projects by scanning nature items and printing them on homemade recycled paper.
She lived her life to the fullest, guided by the love of God, with integrity, fairness and honesty tempered by a wonderful sense of humor.
She is survived by two sisters, Wyona Perry of Shenandoah and Florence Kendrick of Galesburg, Ill., three sons, Darrell Bogue (Charlotte) of San Diego, Marwin Bogue (Maxine) of Lake Shore, Minn., and Morris Bogue of Ames, four daughters, Carolyn Taylor (Craig) of Nevada, Jody Bogue of North Riverside, Ill., Janet Smith of Ridgway, Colo., and Barb Broderick (John) of Waukee. She is also survived by 22 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Detlef, and one son, Russell.
Memorial contributions will be designated to the Mainstream Living, Ames Branch.
Stevens Memorial Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
