Highway 198 crash kills Visalia woman
An elderly Visalia woman died Wednesday following a collision on State Highway 198 in which her husband was critically injured and a Tulare man less seriously hurt.
The accident involved a car driven by Philip Hill, 20, 764 No. F St., Tulare, and one driven by H. H. Bates, 92, Visalia, at 1:24p.m. Wednesday on Hwy 198 and Chinowth Road in Visalia.
Rose Bates, 83, a passenger with her husband, died three hours later at Kaweah Delta District Hospital where Bates is also being treated for major injuries.
Hill was treated at the hospital and released.
The Highway Patrol investigation of the accident is still underway. The report said Bates was driving south bound on Chinowth Road and Hill driving west on 198. Mrs. Bates' death has not yet been officially registered as a traffic fatality.

Mrs. H. H. Bates
Services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Hadley Funeral Chapel in Visalia for former Tularean Mrs. H. H. (Rose E) Bates, 84, who died Wednesday at Kaweah Delta Hospital in Visalia following an automobile accident. Mrs. Bates, 940 E. Houston Ave., Visalia, was born in Waterloo, Ohio, and attended school there where she met and married H. H. Bates in 1922.
The couple came to California in 1923, moving to Tulare in 1928. Two years later they moved to Visalia.
Mrs. Bates was a member of the Visalia First Church of God and the Senior Citizens Club.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Oscar Bates, Visalia; three daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Chedester, Visalia, Mrs. Mildred Gordon, Tulare, and Mrs. Alline Meyer, Visalia; one sister, Mrs. G. L. Hixon, Visalia; 17 grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren.
Burial will follow the services in the Visalia District Cemetery.
