Angela, or Gala as her husband called her, was born to am immigrant family in Massachusetts. Her parents had immigrated from Sweden, John Bertz with his mother and Anna Kuniholm with her whole family. They settled in a Scandinavian community in Gardner. There are many family members still in the area. Gala's family moved to the Northwest in about 1909, to help treat her brother, Edmund's TB. They spent some time farming in Whatcom County, then moved to Ketchikan Alaska for a couple of years, fishing and owning a store. They returned to Island Co., Washington State, where Gala graduated from high school and went to stenographers school. It was while working in an office, she met lumberman, Jim Bock, and after what appears to have been a whirlwind courtship, they married. Soon after that, her brother died and her parents returned to the east coast. Gala and Jim had two children Edmund, and Virginia. Gala was an accomplished cook and seamstress, creating many beautiful pieces of cross-stitch and embroidery. She loved candy and was an amazing baker. In the 20s, she was the primary operator of the grocery and gas station they owed in Moclips. It was there that their home burned to the ground and they started all over again. She was a member of the Eastern Star, American Legion Distaff, and Saron Evangelical Lutheran Church. She is loved and missed every day.
