Esther R. Balts, 85, of Barron went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008.
Esther was born Oct. 4, 1922, in the village of Owen, Clark County, the daughter of John and Minnie (Roepke) Blum. Esther graduated from Owen High School in 1940 and then attended North Central Bible College in Minneapolis, Minn. As a young lady, she worked various jobs in Wausau as well as at Owen Bakery. Esther worked for ABC in Chetek in the early 1970s. She worked for Jerome Foods in Barron for over 10 years and retired in 1988.
On March 15, 1947, Esther Blum and Lester Balts of Cadott were united in marriage at Owen Gospel Tabernacle. In 1954, the family moved to Eau Claire, where Esther was a homemaker and her husband was a home builder. In 1966, the family moved to Colfax, where the family was engaged in farming. In 1969, the family moved to the Chetek area to continue farming. In 1976, Esther and Lester retired from farming and moved to a country home near Dallas until 1999. That year they moved to Barron. In 2006, Esther was diagnosed with transitional cell carcinoma. In the spring of 2007, Esther moved to Glenwood City to reside with her daughter, Sharon. In December of 2007, Esther moved into the Mayo Luther Midelfort Nursing Home in Barron. Esther was an accomplished pianist. She greatly enjoyed crocheting, documenting family genealogy, singing and reading, as well as spending time visiting with family and friends.
She is survived by sons, David (Barbara) Balts of Chetek and Douglas (Sharon) Balts of Dallas; daughters, Sylvia (Ed) Halverson of Barron, Sharon (Don) Stauffer of Glenwood City and Cynthia (Don) Nelson of Barron; sons, John (Joanne) Balts of Rice Lake, Bill (Shelly) Balts of Barron and Kevin (Shannon) Balts of Chippewa Falls; and daughter, Jennifer (Rob) Zinsmaster of Cameron; 32 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other relatives; as well as a great number of friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; four brothers, Henry, Karl, Edward and John; two sisters, Lois and Grace; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 25, 2008, at Foursquare Gospel Church in Barron, with the Rev. Wayne Espeseth officiating. Burial will be in Dallas Cemetery in the town of Dallas.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Rausch and Steel Funeral Home in Barron and on Monday at the church one hour prior to the services.
