World War II Navy veteran Alex Blewett Jr., 90, of 1927 Cherry Dr., an attorney, died of natural causes Saturday at Peace Hospice.
His memorial service is 11 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church. Private burial of ashes will precede the memorial service. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Croxford Funeral Home and Crematory.
Survivors include his wife, Fern Foerschler Blewett of Great Falls; a daughter, Sandy Davidson and her husband, Larry, of Cloverdale, Calif.; a son, Alexander "Zander" Blewett III and his wife, Andy, of Great Falls; a daughter, Suzie Taleff and her husband, Mick, of Great Falls; a sister, Lois Lawson of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; and grandchildren Jeff and his wife, Kimber, Eric and John Davidson, Anders and Drew Blewett and Chris, Mike and Lindsey Taleff, and great-grandchildren Hannah and Sam Davidson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alex Blewett and Ethel Brown Blewett, a brother, Wesley Blewett and a sister, Adele Hawley.
Alex was born on Feb. 1, 1913, in Butte, Mont., where he was raised by his parents. He attended the University of Montana, where he earned a B.A. degree in business and economics in 1935. He earned a law degree from UM in 1936.
Upon graduation, he came to Great Falls, where he began working with the firm which would eventually become Jardine, Stephenson, Blewett and Weaver. He worked for the firm from 1938 to 2003, except for his service with the Navy from 1941 to 1945.
While in Great Falls, he met, fell in love with, and married Fern Foerschler.
As an attorney, Alex was recognized for his contributions and skills. His awards include the prestigious Jameson Award for Professionalism, presented by the State Bar of Montana as its highest award recognizing contributions to the practice of law. He was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers in 1958. He was Chairman of the Montana Constitutional Revision Commission. He was also a lifetime member of the National Commission on Uniform State Laws.
Ales was active in community organizations. He was president of the Great Falls Chamber of Commerce, the Great Falls YMCA, the Great Falls Baseball Club and the Meadowlark Country Club. Alex was a director of the Montana Deaconess Hospital, a director of the First National Bank, was on the Univeristy of Montana Law School Board of Visiors and a trustee on the U of M Foundation. He also attained the 33rd Order of Scottish Rite.
Alex was active in state government, where he was chairman of the Montana Highway Commission and served two terms as a representative. He was elected majority leader in his second term.
His hobbies and interests included golf, handball, fishing and traveling. Alex was an avid sports fan, especially for events involving his grandchildren.
