ROCKLAND — Grace B. Azevedo, 88, died peacefully June 28, 2011, with her son at her side, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center, after a period of declining health. Born in Frankfort on Nov. 11, 1922, she was the daughter of John Sr. and Minnie MacDougal Blethen. With her family, Grace moved to Rockland in 1927, where she attended local schools and was a 1941 graduate of Rockland High School. For a brief time, she attended nursing school in Boston, and later worked at van Baalens in Rockland.

In 1942, she married James R. Azevedo, who was stationed at the Naval Base in Rockland at that time. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1946.

Grace was employed with New England Telephone & Telegraph Company in Rockland, until being transferred to the Portland office in 1969. She retired from N.E.T. & T. in 1979, following 33 years of employment with that company.

She was a longtime active member of the First Baptist Church of Rockland, and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.

Other than her mother, father and an infant daughter, Cynthia Azevedo, Grace was predeceased by her brother, John Blethen in 2001; her sister, Jacquelin C. Blethen in 2002; her sister-in-law, Ruth Blethen in 2004; and her daughter-in-law, Marie Azevedo in 2009.

She is survived by her son, Michael J. Azevedo Sr. and his fiancée Darice Weaver of Randolph; two grandsons and their wives, Michael Jr. and Crystal Azevedo of Carmel and Mark and Kristin Azevedo of Weeks Mills; five great-grandchildren, Ryan, Samuel, Jessica, Tyler and Cody; nephews and nieces including William Blethen and his wife, Susan, of Falmouth, Rand Blethen of Sagi, Brazil, Janice Cramer and her husband, Lyle, of Union, Johnna B. Brazier of Dedham and Joyce A. Raychard and her husband, Wayne, of Tanjania; as well as several great-nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at Achorn Cemetery on Old County Road in Rockland. (Republican Journal 7/5/2011)
