Amanda Roberts Blankenship, 91, of Robbinsville, entered into rest September 21, 2006 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta, Ga.
She was born June 23, 1915 in Robbinsville and in 2004, went to live with her daughter, Darnell, in College Park, Ga.
She was the daughter of the late George Thomas and Mary "Mae" Hyde Roberts. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson Blankenship in April 1990; infant son; sisters, Eva Williams, Laura George, Frankie Crisp, Georgia Singleton; brothers, Bob Roberts, Otis Roberts and Posey Roberts.
Mrs. Blankenship taught school in Graham County for 44 years. The majority of her career was dedicated to her fourth grade students, with additional time spent teaching kindergarten and serving as the principal of East Buffalo and Sweetwater Schools, before the consolidation.
Amanda loved teaching and was always thrilled to see her former students. She graduated from the Asheville Normal School and Western Carolina College. She enjoyed gardening, painting and reading in her spare time. She was a member of the Robbinsville First Baptist Church and enjoyed attending the community Bible study class at the Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star chapter in Andrews and received her 50 year pin several years ago.
She is survived by her sons and their wives, Darrell and DeAnna Blankenship of Woodbridge, Va., Lynn and Betsy Blankenship of Apison, Tenn., Leland and Lynn Blankenship of Chandler; daughter, Darnell Zachary of College Park, Ga.; grandchildren, Dee-Lana and her husband, Randall Styron of Union City, Ga., Beth Blankenship of Apison, Tenn., Logan and Lacie Blankenship of Chandler, Brandon and Clayton Blankenship of Woodbridge, Va.; great-grandchildren, Hannah and Amanda Styron of Union City, Ga. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 23, at the Townson-Smith Chapel. The Rev. Noah Crowe officiated. Committal services were held Sunday at the Old Mother Cemetery.
Townson-Smith Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
