Albert was the son of John Bland and Grace Helen Boxall. He served in the US Air Force during World War II and retired on May 31, 1957 as a Master Sergeant. Al was a prisoner of war for three and a half years and was a participant and survivor of the Bataan Death March. On June 24, 1988, President Reagan presented him the Prisoner of War Medal; he was already the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal. He was a member of the Shiner Boumi Temple and the Masons. He was also the past National Commander of the American ex-Prisoner of War, a past commander of V.F.W in Joppa, and a past Grand Tall Cedar.
