Dr. George Blanch

LOGAN - Dr. George Thomas Blanch, 71 of Logan, died Wednesday of cause incident to age. Dr. Blanch was born Sept. 8, 1901 in West Weber, Utah, a son of Joseph and Laura Etherington Blanch. He attended Weber County Schools, Weber College, and received his B.A. from Utah State University and doctor's degree from Cornell University.

In 1934 he joined the Agricultural Economics Department at Utah State University and was appointed head of the department in 1952, a position he held until his retirement. During this time he obtained leaves of absence for assignments with the Bureau of Reclamation and 1952 spent several months in Turkey and Greece as an economic advisor for the Harza Engineering Co. from 1958 to 1960 he was economic advisor for the Karadi Agriculture College in Iran.

In 1957 he represented the mountain states at the hearings in Washington, D.C., held by the Joint Economics Committee on policy for commercial agriculture. He was the author or joint author, of 66 scientific publications and technical bulletins. A member of the LDS Church, he served a mission to Great Britain, and was branch president at Cornell University. He was a teacher in the 18th Ward Sunday School and had worked in the high priest quorum and was an assistant ward clerk. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phl, Sigma Zi, Western and American Farm Economics associations. He served as president of the Utah State Faculty Association and Utah Conference on Higher Education. On Aug 22, 1935, he was married to Eva Baxter in the Logan LDS Temple.

Surviving are his widow; two sons and one daughter, Dr. G. Thomas Blanch, Salt lake City; Mrs. Barbara Lee Robertson, Orange, Calif.; Joseph Paul Blanch, attending Northwestern Dental School; seven grandchildren. Also surviving are the following brothers and sisters; J. Glenn Blanch, John Blanch, Mrs.. Parley (Eliza) Wagstaff, all of Ogden; Mrs. Sarah Judkins, Murray; Donald Blanch, Burley, Idaho; Mrs. Lee (Ethel) Stoker, Mesa, Wash.; Dr. Grant E. Blanch, Corvallis, Ore.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Hall Mortuary where friends may call tonight from 7 to 9 and Saturday one hour before services. Burial in the Logan City Cemetery.
