PORTLAND – Mary B. (Blanch) Bailey died peacefully at her home in Portland on July 26, 2008.
She was born on August 2, 1924 in Lubec, the daughter of Fred and Gladys Blanch. She grew up on her father's dairy farm and graduated from Lubec High School. She later attended Hussen College in Bangor. She married Guy Bailey in 1944. The Bailey's lived in Lubec, Miami, FL, Mobile, AL, Norwood, MA, South Portland, Westbrook, and Portland. Mary worked for the South Portland school system as an elementary school librarian for many years.
Mary loved playing bridge with friends, doing crossword puzzles and putting together jigsaw puzzles. She enjoyed spending time at the family camp on Little Sebago Lake and being with her extended family. Mary also enjoyed sewing and cooking. She sewed everything from clothes for her young children to repairs to her husband's sails to a wedding gown for her daughter-in-law. She was a wonderful example of kindness and patience to her family and all those around her.
Mary and Guy were long time members of Pride's Corner Congregational Church in Westbrook.
Mary was predeceased by her husband, Guy, in June 2007, and by her daughter, Beth, in 1990. She is survived by her son, David and his wife, Linda of Hollis, NH, their sons, Colin and his wife Beth of Aiken SC, Joshua and his wife Nicole of Manchester, NH and Douglas and his wife Jennifer, of Lyman.
Visiting hours will be 5-8 p.m. on Monday, July 28th at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 29th at Pride's Corner Congregational Church, 235 Pride Street, Westbrook. Burial in Brooklawn Memorial Park will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pride's Corner Congregational Church, Westbrook.
