George Lansing Blakely, 78, retired laborer, died Friday in an Idaho Falls hospital of cancer.

Born July 25, 1897, at Brooklyn (now Elsinore), Sevier County, Utah, he was the son of Jonathan Collins Blakely and Mary Jane Bland.

In December of 1905, the family moved to a ranch above Heise Hot Springs at the mouth of Kelly Canyon. He attended school in Utah and at Heise.

Mr. Blakely worked on the ranch with the sheep and cattle and in 1920 he moved with his mother to Idaho Falls where he worked at the Golden Rule Store and did carpenter work.

He was married to Inis Groom on July 14, 1930, at American Falls and the marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.

Mr. Blakely was a High Priest in the Idaho Falls 9th Ward Idaho Falls Stake.

He began working for Garrett Freightlines in 1933 and retired in 1962. Most of this time he was a line driver between Idaho Falls and Ashton and he became the first Garrett driver to receive a 20-year safe driving award and later a 25 year award from the company. He received a commendation from Governor Smylie of Idaho when he received the award.

Following retirement, Mr. Blakely spent his winters in Arizona and most of the summer months in Island Park.

Survivors include his widow; one son, Robert George Blakely of Tooele, Utah; one daughter, Mrs. Gary (Beth) Lewis of Idaho Falls; two sisters, Mrs. mary Dowd and Mrs. Lila DaBell, both of Idaho Falls; and seven grandchildren.
