Blakely, Betty Jane Lissner
August 5, 1920 - May 10, 2010
B.J. passed away peacefully on May 10, 2010.
B.J. graduated from Westlake School in 1938, and matriculated to UCLA, where she joined the Delta Delta Delta sorority. She graduated in 1942, and immediately joined the war effort, working as a manager in the Personnel Dept. of North American Aviation.
After the war, B.J. had a chance encounter on the Wilshire bus with UCLA '42 classmate William Blakely. Bill had returned safely from combat as a Marine officer in the Pacific. They were married on May 19, 1950, just in time for Bill to be called back for the Korean War.
After Bill's discharge, the couple bought a home in Windsor Square, and eventually settled in Hancock Park. Together they raised sons Chris and Bruce and, after Bill earned his pilot's license, delighted in taking cross-country flying trips-- mostly to fishing spots. Destinations included Baja California, Maine, the Bahamas, and Alaska.
A licensed Real Estate Broker, B.J. was a visionary who helped her family acquire and develop properties. She also worked in management at Bullocks, and as a Building Manager in downtown Los Angeles.
B.J. served the community for years through her activities with the Della Robbia Guild of the Children's Hospital and UCLA'S Gold Shield, among many other affiliations. She and Bill were members of the Pauley Pavilion Founders' Club, and B.J. was elected Vice President of the UCLA Alumni Association. One of her proudest moments was escorting former President Dwight Eisenhower to an Alumni Luncheon at UCLA.
B.J.'s grandparents came to California in the mid-1800s. Her father, Henry H. Lissner, M.D., was the first Chief of Staff of Cedars of Lebanon Hospital. B.J.'s Mother, Lillie Meyer received a medal from William Randolph Hearst in 1894 for organizing her fellow students and creating a program to feed San Francisco's unemployed. Her uncle Ben Meyer, a noted L.A. philanthropist, was co-founder and the first President of Union Bank.
B.J. was predeceased by her beloved husband of 55 years, Bill, her brother, Henry Lissner, Jr., and her sister, Mary Lissner Stuppy. She is survived by her sons Chris and Bruce, daughters-in-law Betsy and Lillian, grandchildren Lauren and William, and numerous nieces and nephews.
At B.J.'s request, there will be a celebration of her life, but no funeral. Contact her family for details. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Children's Hospital, Los Angeles.
