Arthur W. Blake
Arthur W. Blake, 90, a resident of Cashmere for the past 24 years, died Sunday, July 29, 2001 at Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee.
He was born on June 25, 1911 to Edward and Emma (Wagner) Blake at Jackson, MI.
In 1918, Arthur moved with his family to Snohomish where he later graduated from Snohomish High School. After graduating, he joined the National Guard and in 1940, was put into active duty in the United States Army.
During his tour of duty, much of his time was spent in the Aleutian Islands on coastal watch. Arthur also attended several military trade schools and because of his knowledge, was nicknamed "Daddy Blake." In 1945, he was assigned to the United Nations Conference in San Francisco where he was chauffeur for the Liberian Nationals.
After 20 years of dedicated service, Arthur was honorably discharged. He then returned to Snohomish where he married Theone Berge on June 9, 1956 and went to work for the U.S. Postal Service as a postman. In 1955, he moved his family to Cashmere where he worked for Schmitten Lumber Co. and later for the Cashmere School District as a custodian for Vale School, retiring in 1973. Arthur and Theone later moved to Gold Bar and then to Monroe and in 1977, back to Cashmere.
Arthur was very active in the American Legion Post #64 in Cashmere and also was a member of the VFW Post #10445 and the Voiture 90, 48 et 8. He was also a longtime member and Deacon at the First Presbyterian Church in Cashmere until his death. Arthur also volunteered much of his time at the Cashmere Senior Center.
He is survived by a son, Richard E. Blake and wife Carol of Woodbine, GA, stepdaughter, Kay Cox and husband Larry of Wenatchee, stepsons, David Eddings and wife Leigh of Carson, NV and Dr. Dennis Eddings Janie of Salem, OR, one brother, William Blake of Snohomish, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Theone in 1981, one brother and one sister.
A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, Aug. 3, 2001 at the First Presbyterian Church in Cashmere at 10:30 a.m. with the Reverend Chuck Clarke officiating. Interment will follow at the Cashmere City Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001 from 1 to 7 p.m. at Braun Funeral Home in Cashmere.
For those friends who wish, Memorials may be made in Arthur's name to the 40 et 8 Nurses Scholarship Fund.
