Also to note, there is a mention in the Capitol Times dated Monday 04 Jun 1934 a death/burial notice for a James Edwin Blackwood. "Burial rites for James Edwin Blackwood, colored, resident of the Wisconsin Transient Bureau, who was drowned Thursday, were held here today following services on Saturday at the Schroeder Funeral Home at which the Rev. Joseph Washington officiated. In the newspaper dated Friday , 01 Jun 1934 page 1.
Transient Negro Youth Drowned in Lake Monona.
A transient Negro youth drowned within a few heet of four colored companions, also transients, 200 feet off the old South Madison sanatorium pier on Lake Monona Thrusday afternoon. His cries for help attracted residents in the neighborhood, who called an ambulance.
Despite the efforts of crews in three boars, the body had not been recovered last night.
Identification cards in the drowned boy's coat pockets showed that he was Ernest Johnson, 18, of Fresno, Cal. With four other colored youths from different parts of the country, he had been swimming for a half hour. Witnesses on the shore said he then swam into deeper water, awent down twice, calling for help, and then stayed down. His companions were swimming several yards away.
TO NOTE: Madison was in the midst of a heat wave, with temps reaching 100.

Recover Body of Negro Youth from Monona
After 12 hours of dragging the bottom of Lake Monona, the body of Ernest Johnson, 19, of Fresno, Calif., who was deowned while swimming Thursday, was recovered at 6 p.m. Friday and taken to the county morgue.
The Wisconsin Transient home has wired to the youth's parents, and funeral arrangements have been held pending an answer.
