Jonathan was born in Hopewell Twp., old Hunterdon (now Mercer) Co., NJ, the son of Daniel Blackwell and Elizabeth Van Cleve. He married Amanda Malvina Van Marter on 12 Oct. 1842 in Hunterdon Co., NJ. He died in Princeton Twp., Mercer Co., NJ.

Jonathan was a farmer in Hopewell Twp., 1850-80. He was co-executor of his brother James's estate, 1853, and co-executor of father's estate, 1857.
