He was born on 21 Jul 1923 in Savoy, Champaign, Illinois. His parents were John A. Black & Mary Elizabeth(Tinsman).
According to Army records, he was 67 inches tall and 128 pounds at the time of his enlistment. Later in life, he was a member of the American Legion in Mattoon and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5520 in Champaign, Illinois. He was also a member of the Mattoon Moose Lodge #312 and the Eagles of Mattoon.
He enlisted in the US Army on 4 Jan 1943 as a Private and served during WWII.
He married Joann Lenore Fry on 3 Jan 1947 in Champaign, Illinois. He had 4 children with Joann (William, John III, Lynette, Mary)
He died at the age of 75 at 10:00pm on Monday, 31 Aug 1998 at Provena Medical Center in Urbana, Illinois. Private graveside services were held at Woodlawn Cemetery in Urbana, Illinois. He was buried with full military rites by VFW Post 5520 of Champaign, Illinois.
