Birth: Dec. 30, 1884
Toledo
Cumberland County
Illinois, USA
Death: May 17, 1936
Thomasboro
Champaign County
Illinois, USA

He was born on 30 Dec 1884 in Greenup, Illinois to David and Louisa (Reed) Black. According to WWI draft registration cards, he was tall and had a slender build. He also had blue eyes.

According to early census records (1880-1900) he lived with his parents in Union Township in Cumberland County. According to the 1910 census, he was a live-in, hired man for Clarence Tinsman and worked on their family farm. After his marriage to Katherine in 1913, he rented a house on Commercial Avenue in Thomasboro, Illinois through at least 1930. It appears he lived at this address until his death in 1936.

According to census records in 1910, he worked on the Clarence Tinsman family farm as a Hired man and lived at their residence in the next township over. According to WWI Draft registration records in 1918, he was a laborer at the local grain elevator, probably the one still located in Thomasboro today. Census records also indicate he was a house carpenter later in life. According to family member interviews, he was considered an amateur veterinarian where local residents used to call upon him to look at their horses and livestock. Reportedly, that is where he earned his nickname of "Doc".

He married Katherine Florence Smith on 27 Nov 1913 in Rantoul County, Illinois. He had 6 children with Katherine (Evelyn, Helen, Doris, David, Esther, Jack, Margaret).

Alfred died at his home at the age of 51 at 8:00 P.M. on Sunday, 17 May 1936 as a result of an extended illness that he had been battling for over a year. He had been bedfast for the last month before passing. Funeral service was conducted at his home at 2:30 P.M. on Tuesday, 19 May 1936 with Rev. Star, former Thomasboro pastor, officiating over the ceremony. He was buried in the vicinity of section 17 (Front Right) at Beckman Cemetery just outside of Thomasboro. Originally he was buried in an unmarked grave, but later was given a small marker indicating his final location.
