Distinguished local psychiatrist and community member James C. Black, MD, died suddenly at his Farmington home on Saturday, (January 19, 2013), of an unexpected illness. He was 78 years old. Dr. Black is survived by his wife, Monica Black, and five children; Thomas, Timothy, Andrew, Jonathan Black, and Elizabeth Scanlon-Black, his 20 grandchildren, and many other extended family members. Dr. Black graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.S., the first member of his family to complete college, and subsequently obtained his medical degree from Strich School of Medicine in Chicago. He later completed residencies at Loyola University and Ohio State University in Psychiatry and a fellowship at the University of Cincinnati in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. In addition, he was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving two years of active duty during this period in Wichita Falls, TX. Following completion of his fellowship, Dr. Black and his family moved to West Simsbury, and Dr. Black served as the Medical Director of Child & Family Services in Hartford, providing acute care services to the communities' children for over a decade. He subsequently established a private practice, where he has continued his service alongside his now 20 colleagues, until the time of his death. In addition, he was extraordinarily active in medical training and education in the state, as well as serving on the Board at the Institute of Living and the Connecticut Children's Medical Center, and providing less formal but equally vital contributions as an instructor, adviser and mentor to innumerable area medical students and physicians.
The funeral will be Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013 beginning with visitation from 10 a.m. to Noon at the Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Ave., West Hartford, followed by a service at 12 Noon.
