George enlisted on 17 Sept. 1861 into Company H, 25th Massachusetts Infantry. His occupation was listed as grocer. He was promoted to a Full Corporal on 25 Nov. 1862. Later he was captured and became a prisoner of war at Richmond, Virginia where he died in July 1864.

Cpl. Bixby was wounded and captured as a prisoner of war during the Battle of Drury's Bluff in Virginia on May 16, 1864.
