When the Missouri Pacific Railroad bought out a Texas railroad, Bixby moved to St. Louis to work as a purchasing agent for Mo-Pac. Later, he took a position at the American Car and Foundry Company where he rose rapidly and eventually served as chairman of the board. After retiring, he became president of the Laclede Gas Light Company. He was a member of many civic organizations and gave much of his time and money. He donated a large collection of rare books and manuscripts to the Missouri Historical Society and made significant contributions to the St. Louis Art Museum. He was president of the Art Museum and the Missouri Historical Society, director of the Public Library, an original incorporator of the American Red Cross and served on the board of St. Luke's Hospital.
