Adam was born in Leather Post, Lowhill Township, PA. He was the son of Lewis Bittner and Emmaline Amanda Bittner. He married Adamissa Rabenold and they had 5 children: Harry L.N. Helen Frederick Adan Lucy E. He conduted a grocery store. He attended public schools and in early life worked in his father's machine shop. At the age 15 he began clerking in a general store at Lyon Valley for C.W. Haas where he served for 3 and one half years. In 1881 he moved to Allentown and worked in Koch Brothers Grocery Store on the corner of 6'th and Hamilton Streets. After 5 years the partnership was dissolved and he then continued in the same business at 21 North 5'th St. Allentown, PA for a period of almost 20 years. He was a lutheran and attended the St. Michaels Lutheran Chuch, Allentown, PA. He served as an Elder there. He then was the school tax collector, then county commissioner in 1905, Elected. During his administration an addition to the county jail was built in 1908, the large concrete bridge at Bethlehem was constructed, the Slatington and Walnutport bridge over the Lehigh River was built, and the Almshouse and electric light system was installed. A sewage disposal plant was contructed and all the turnpikes were all freed throughout the entire county. He served as treasurer of the Retail Merchant's Assoc. for 12 years and was trustee of the Lehigh Saengerbund from 1896. He was treasurer of the Bittner Slate CO., beginning in 1901. He served as Pres. president of the Board of Prison inspectors for 2 years during which time many improvements were made. He was appointed by the courts as adjuster to close up the business of the Allentown Mercantile CO., He served 3 years as city school tax collector. He was a Rebublican and took an active interested in political matters. He was one of the charter members of Washington Camp, P.O.S. of A., No 406 and served as the treasurer. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. for many years as well as of the Royal Arcanum where he served as each officer at one time or another.
