Angelica was the daughter of Thomas and Tamsen Bishop. Both parents were born in England. In the late 1700s, Thomas was appointed to be Director of Royal Fabrics in Oporto, Portugal. Thomas, his wife, and their children left Portugal in 1810 and sailed to the United States,to escape the Napoleonic War. Oporto, had been sacked by the French Army. They arrived at the Port of Baltimore, Maryland.
In 1811, when the United States conflict with Great Britain threatened the American coastline, the family moved to Philadelphia.
Angelica Bishop, a portrait painter, is listed in McElroy's 1839 Philadelphia Directory and in the 1840 Philadelphia City Directory as living at 213 Cherry Street in Philadelphia in the same house as her father, Thomas, also a portrait painter, and her brother, Joaquim.
On December 5, 1849, Angelica married Solomon Barrett, a physician. At the time, Solomon had several children from an earlier marriage. In 1850 Solomon moved, with his extended family, to the Town of Leroy in Genesee County, New York to open a medical practice. Solomon's father, Moses, had also practiced medicine in Leroy from 1842 until 1850, when he moved to Wisconsin where he was appointed Superintendent of the State Reform School.
The 1850 US Census indicates that Angelica (Age 35) her husband Solomon, a Physician (Age 40), Solomon's sons Solomon Jr. (Age 16)and Jedediah (Age 4); and daughter Sophia Lucinda (Age 3) were living in the Town of LeRoy in Genesee County, New York. Also living in the Household was Emily Barrett (Age 45), presumed to be Solomon Sr.'s sister.
The 1860 US Census, recorded in June 1860, lists Angelica (Age 49), her husband Solomon (Age 50), daughter Sophia Lucinda (Age 13), and son Edwin (Age 9) as still living in the Town of Leroy.
In 1868, a book, "The Linden-tree Cottage and the Accepted Sacrifice", written by Angelica was published by the New York Publisher, Hurd and Houghton.
In the 1870 US Census Angelica (Age 59), her husband Solomon (Age 60), daughter Lucinda (Age 23), son Edwin (Age 19), and daughter Fannie (Age 16) were still living in their home in Le Roy.
The 1880 US Census lists Angelica (Age 71), her husband, Solomon (Age 70), and their children, son Edwin (Age 29), and adopted daughter, Libbie Wood (Age 18) as still living in Le Roy, Genesee County, New York.
Solomon died in February 1884, and is buried in Machpelah Cemetery in Le Roy, Genesee County, New York, along with Angelica and many of their children.
