Head-on Collision Near Merkel Fatal to 4

4 Others Injured in U.S. 80 Crash

Four persons were killed and four others injured in a head-on collision two miles east of Merkel on U.S. Highway 80 at 12:30 o'clock this morning.

Killed instantly were Constable Oscar L. Bishop of Trent, 59, his son, Oscar Sherrill Bishop of Midland, 35, and Leon Chapman of Grand Falls, Texas, 21.

Mrs. O.L. Bishop, 55, died two and a half hours later in Sadler Clinic in Merkel. Her death was caused by compound fractures of both legs and severe shock.

In critical condition at Sadler Clinic this morning were Mrs. Oscar Sherrill Bishop, who received a fractured skull, and her sister, Mrs. Wayne Bolin of Corpus Christi, who had a fractured pelvis.

Mrs. Bolin's daughter, Tena, 8, was dismissed from the hospital this morning. Receiving first-aid treatment was Robert H. Long of Hobbs, N.M., 24, who suffered only a knee injury.

The Bishops, Mrs. Bolin and her daughter were returning to their Trent and Midland homes from Waco where they attended funeral services for Mrs. O.L. Bishop's mother.

As G.G. Fitzhugh, state highway patrol officer, pictured the accident, the 1946 Ford sedan, driven by the younger Bishop, went out of control and swerved to the left on the highway after striking a highway construction barricade which had been knocked down either by another vehicle or strong winds. Flares and other warning signals had been doused by heavy rain or toppled by the high winds, he added.

Coming east was a 1945 Mercury station wagon driven by Robert Long. The vehicles met head-on.

Chapman was sleeping in the Long vehicle. He died of a broken neck.

Chapman's body was removed to the Kiker-Warren Funeral Home here where it was being held today awaiting arrival of his parents from Grand Falls. They were expected about noon.
