James L. Bishop, born in Van Zandt County, Texas, in 25 November, 1900 to James J. Bishop and Mary Jane Nelms, both born in Texas. In 1920, Thelma Ward is living in Amarillo, and is in the City Directory of that year, living with her widowed father and many of her brothers. This must be where they married, but in the US Census of 1930 James and Thelma are married, living in Vega, Oldham County, TX, with both children, who they named after themselves: Thelma, age 4 1/2 born in TX, and James L., age 1 1/2, born Texas. The 1930 record says they were both 29 and had been married since they were both 20, so they must have married shortly after the census was taken.
Family legend says James was a foreman at a cotton gin and was killed in a work accident. He died May 21, 1941 in Amarillo, Potter Co., TX, where most of the local family members lived. He was 40 years 5 months 26 days old. Two days later, he was interred at Llano Cemetery in Amarillo May 23, 1951. Thelma never remarried.
