Mr. H.D. "Junior" Bishop, 88, passed away Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012, at the Craighead Nursing Center.
He was born November 22, 1923, in Bookland, AR., to the late Hallie Dee and Mary Martin Bishop. Mr. Bishop graduated from Brookland High School in 1941.
He married Marye Elizabeth Osment on July 25, 1942, and they were happily married for 65 years, until her death, September 13, 2007.
He enlisted in the US Navy in October 1942 and served aboard the USS Dobbin during WWII in the South Pacific, until the end of the war. He returned to Jonesboro, where we worked for Jonesboro Lumber Company, distributed the Memphis Commercial Appeal, Railway Express, Arkansas Power and Light, Midsouth Gas Company and ARKLA Gas Company where he retired in 1985 after 35 years of loyal service.
He grew up as a member of the Brookland United Methodist Church and was a member of the Fisher Street United Methodist Church from 1945 until his death. He was a member of the American Legion for 62 years. He was an avid sports fan, especially the St. Louis Cardinals, Nascar Fan, loved golf and Fishing, Particularly with his grandson Andy. He was a dedicated crossword puzzle worker and competitive domino player. Mr. Bishop had a wonderful sense of humor, a great imagination and a fun loving spirit. Known as "Pop" to his family, he always kept the humor in every situation. He dearly loved his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Jackie Bishop of Jonesboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Marsha and Greg Peters of Brown Summit, NC; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert (Bob) and Doris Bishop of Brookland; grandchildren, Andy Bishop (Kristi) of West Memphis, Angela Hayes (Lee) of Pocahontas and Marty Bishop (Molli) of Aubrey, TX; five Great Grandchildren, Susan Bishop, Jackson Bishop, Corbin Bishop, Kate Hayes and Margaret June Bishop; many nieces and nephews.
He is also proceeded in death by his five brothers, Glyndal (Glen) Bishop, Rondal Bishop, Glifford (G.G.) Bishop, Wayne Bishop and Edwin (Eddie) Bishop; three sisters, Golden Richardson, Helen Stuart and Eileen Watson Lovett.
A graveside service was held at Oaklawn Cemetery. Burial was under the direction of Gregg- Langford Bookout Funeral Home.
