Florian Biron: STEEPLEJACK REMEMBERED Heroic WWII vet dies at 91 : Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
Daily News Tribune, The (Waltham, MA) - July 27, 2007
Deceased Name: Florian Biron: STEEPLEJACK REMEMBERED Heroic WWII vet dies at 91
FRAMINGHAM - During World War II Pfc. Florian Biron destroyed bridges and road blocks, laid booby traps connected to grenades, and located and planted mines. He was wounded twice and awarded the Purple Heart.

In his personal life, he was gentle and humble and painted church steeples including those of St. Joseph and St. Mary's in Waltham.

''I think the war had an impact on him,'' said his son, Roger Biron of Framingham. ''I think it made him appreciate life. He wasn't a hunter or fisherman. He didn't want to hurt anything.''

Biron, a resident of Framingham, and a longtime former resident of Marlborough and Waltham, died Wednesday at age 91.

A native of Quebec, he spoke French fluently. During the war he interrogated civilians and civilian prisoners to secure military information. He also was an interpreter for French army units, according to his discharge papers.

His son Roger referred to a story in the Daily News Tribune published during World War II that described the actions of Biron, a private first class in the 45th Thunderbird Division. He used his bayonet to help clear an Allied minefield without a map while under heavy enemy fire so a rifle company could begin an assault the next day.

''Because the Germans were only 75 yards away, they couldn't use sweepers because they were too noisy and they were working under the cover of darkness,'' said his son.

''When my father told me that story he said seven men were sent to work in the dark, but five of them left because of enemy fire and only my father and his friend Jack Beech cleared the field. They removed 61 antitank and anti-personnel mines.''

As a father, Biron worked hard raising three girls and three boys. As a younger man Biron painted steeples. As he got older he painted houses and often took his children to work with him. He retired at age 79.

''We all grew up with paintbrushes in our hands,'' said Roger.

Biron met his wife, Beatrice, at a dance before leaving for the war in February 1942. They married when he returned in 1945. During his absence, the couple corresponded by mail. Stacks of letters attest to that.

''They had a really loving relationship,'' said daughter-in-law Laura Biron.

At the time of Beatrice's death in 2003, the couple had been married 58 years.

Laura Biron has great memories of him. ''He was born in Quebec and lit up when he had an opportunity to speak French when we traveled to Montreal and Quebec City,'' she said. ''The most remarkable thing about him is that he never said anything negative about anyone.''

Biron also enjoyed playing cards. On Saturdays the two couples got together to play whist. ''I looked forward to those Saturdays,'' said Laura Biron.

''It's refreshing in this day and age to have known someone who was just content with life and who just never got upset,'' said Laura Biron.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, July 28, at 9 a.m., at St. Bridget's Church, Rte. 9 East, Framingham Centre.

Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Marlborough.

Visiting hours are today from 5 to 8 p.m., at Boyle Bros. Funeral Home, Framingham.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Cam Neely Foundation for Cancer Care, 30 Winter St., second floor, Boston, MA 02108.
