Doyle W. Birney Jr., 68, of 222 E. Wallace Ave., died the afternoon of Aug. 27, 2009, in Jameson Memorial Hospital. Born April 29, 1941, in New Castle, he was the son of Doyle W. and Rebecca Carson Birney Sr.
He married Carolyn A. Gray on July 24, 1965. She survives in New Castle.
He was a 1959 graduate of New Castle High School and attended Youngstown State University. He was a youth counselor for Cray House. He was previously a drug and alcohol counselor and mental health delegate for the DUI program in New Castle. He also worked as a laborer for the American Cyanamid Co. He enjoyed collecting coins and trains. He liked reading about the Civil War and painting miniature figurines for war re-enactments. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Melissa J. Birney Gardner of New Castle; two sons, Christopher Birney of Parma, Idaho, and Charles Birney of New Castle; one sister, Patricia Adams of New Castle; and three grandchildren, Kelsie, Carson and Camille Birney. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, James Birney.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, 2009, at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, 2429 Wilmington Road.A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009, at Trinity Episcopal Church. The Rev. Dennis Blauser will officiate.Burial will be in Father John's Garden Memorial Columbarium, Trinity Episcopal Church.Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 59 N.
