The following is from contributor, Patricia R. McCullough:
Alonsita was the daughter of Alonzo J. White Jr. and Alice Josephine McLellan. The couple was married in 1879 in Marietta, Georgia. Alonzo was listed as City Sheriff in the 1880 Census of Charleston, South Carolina and the young couple were living with his family. Sadly, he died on November 8, 1880. It appears Alice went home to her parents to have her baby.
On December 6, 1892 Alice J. White married Theodore W. Birney.
On a 1900 ship's passenger list and Alonsita's 1904 newspaper wedding coverage, her name is given as Alonsita White. From that evidence, it appears that her step-father did not adopt her and her maiden name should be White.
