Within four days the friends and neighbors of an aged couple, Thomas Birmingham and Martha (Laport) Birmingham, were called upon to witness their peaceful end.
Martha (Laport) Birmingham passed away January 11, aged 87 years, 8 months and 17 days.
She was born at Stubenville, Ohio. Was united in marriage to Ismar Lyle at Stubenville, Ohio, in 1848. To this union were give 5 children, four of whom survive her but of account of the distance none of them could attend the funeral.
She was married to Thomas Birmingham of Alva, Oklahoma in 1908. Mrs. Birmingham joined the M.E. Church in Ohio in childhood. Her affections and age kept her from attending church after coming to Newkirk. She was taken sick with the grippe about five days before her death. Funeral services were held Thursday, January 13th at the family residence conducted by Rev. L. L. Branton.
Thomas Birmingham, the husband was born in Vermont December 13, 1827, and died in Newkirk, January 16, 1916, aged 88 years, 1 month, and 3 days.
He served his country as a soldier in the was or '61 to '65. He leaves one daughter and two grandsons by a former marriage.
Funeral services by Rev. Harmon were held Sunday, January 16th.
For the past six years, this aged couple have lived in Newkirk where they made many friends who mourn their departure.
