Obituary, TROY FREE PRESS, Friday, October 2x, 1909

Francis Marion Birkhead was born in Lincoln County, Mo. August 27, 1832. He was the son of Abraham B. and Joanna Birkhead. He was first married to Susan A., daughter of William and Elizabeth Overall, who was born in Bullitt County, Ky., September 18, 1830.

To this union nine children were born, as follows: William N. of Indiahoma, Okla; John W., of Sarcoxie, Mo; Euthemia, wife of W. Crume, St. Louis; J.B. of Carthage, Mo; Albert H., of Argentville, Mo; Joel A, of Bowling Green, Mo.; Eliza C. wife of C.F. Miller, of Winfield, Mo.; Emmett Lee of Granfield, Okla., and Joame M., wife of Willet Day, of St. Louis. Of these the three oldest sons and one son-in-law, C.F. Miller, are deacons in Baptist churches and the youngest son a trustee in a Baptist Church.

His first wife died August 1, 1903. He was again married to Mrs. Sarah J. Eddens, of Wright City, January 29, 1905, who with the children, one brother, one sister, and many relatives are left to mourn the loss of one so dearly beloved by all who knew him.

His death occurred in Wright City, Oct. 14, 1909, after only a few minutes sickness. He was 77 years, 1 month and 17 days old.

The people and the church of Wright City of which he was a pastor demanded services and before the remains were brought to New Salem where the writer preached the sermon from Rev., 14th Chap., 13th verse, assisted by Elds. M.S. Whiteside, O.A. Gordon and E.W. Dorsey.

Rev. J.W. Slade, pastor of the M. E. Church, South, conducted appropriate services at his late home in Wright City.

At New Salem a great concourse of relatives and friends from all over the county and elsewhere were present to pay the last tribute of respect to one so highly esteemed. He with his wife united with the Baptist church at New Salem about 1854. In January, 1872, the church at New Salem licensed him to the gospel ministry, the council consisting of Elds. G.W. Foster, M.S. Whiteside, A.G. Mitchell and W.F. Luck.

He began his first pastorate with the Highland Baptist church, Dec. 1872, which continued 17 years. There was not a time when he was not pastor of some church, and at his death he was pastor of Wright City and Palmyra churches, in Bear Creek association. He was moderator at the time of his death.

He preached the introductory sermon of Cuivre association of Fairview in 1892 and was its moderator in 1905 and 1906.

Bro. Birkhead was known throughout Lincoln, Pike, St. Charles and Montgomery counties, having labored both from the pulpit and in the homes. He was companionable at the fireside which made him loved by all from the child to the sire.

He was buried with Masonic honors, of which order he was a prominent member for years, and his body was laid to rest in the family cemetery near New Salem to await the call of the Master.

He has fought a good fight of faith, he has finished his course and his last words were, "Not my will, O Lord, but Thine be done. O Lord, receive my spirit."

May the same Lord whom he loved and so faithfully served comfort the widow, children, relatives and friends and at last bring them unto himself. - J.S. Eames.
