Mr. Birkhead was a builder, developer and real estate investor. He founded Birkhead Custom Homes, was a member of Blessed Mother Catholic Church and retired from Owensboro Fire Department. He was an army veteran of World War II and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Spinal Cord Society. He enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Eva M. Birkhead; two sons, Jim Birkhead and Joe Birkhead, both of Owensboro; two daughters, Josanna LaMastus and Jennifer B. Clark, both of Owensboro; eight grandchildren; a brother, Thomas C. Birkhead of Cocoa Beach, FL, and a sister, Fladge Teresa Hagan of Owensboro.
