Obituary:

Velma G. Davenport, 78, Mt. Vernon, passed away at 6:46 a.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2008, at White Oak Rehabilitation & Health Care Center in Mt. Vernon.

She was born in Jefferson County on Wednesday, April 2, 1930, a daughter of Curt and Grace (Gifford) Birkhead. She married Harold B. Davenport in Mt. Vernon, on Dec. 24, 1948. He preceded her in death on Jan. 2, 1997.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Bill Miller officiating. Interment will follow at East Hickory Hill Cemetery in Jefferson County.

Visitation will be from 12 to 1:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Velma is survived by three sons, the Rev. Gary Davenport and wife Gayla of Mt. Vernon, Jimmy Davenport of Mt. Vernon and Terrell Davenport of Mt.Vernon; two daughters, Teresa Mullinax and husband Randy of Mt. Vernon and Diane Wamble and husband David of Fairview Heights; nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and several nieces· and nephews.

Her parents, her husband, three brothers, one sister and one granddaughter preceded her in death.

Velma was a homemaker and a member of Casey Avenue Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon.
