Clarence Joseph Birkenfeld was born in 1917, son of Joseph Sylvester Birkenfeld and Blanche Lucille Barbara Wagner-Birkenfeld. Grand-son of Johann Sylvester Birkenfeld & Maria Anna Soelker-Birkenfeld, and Jacob Joseph Wagner & Elizabeth Barbara "Lizzie" Cromer-Wagner.

In 1941, Clarence married Mary Margaret Wethington, and they raised two children.
